Overgeneralisation

This is where you reach a conclusion about one event, and inaccurately apply it across the board. Eg. You stumbled in one audition, and now say to yourself, "I'm bad at auditions."

Reframe

When you catch yourself doing this, question yourself, "is this true?" Become a detective and find evidence that proves AND disproves your assumption. Most times you will realise that your generalisation simply isn't true.

Exercise

On a blank piece of paper, write a recurring thought that has been looping in your brain. For example, “I’m not good enough.”

Now answer these two questions:

  1. Is it true?

  2. How do I know it’s true?

Write all the evidence you can find about whether or not the thought is true or not true. Be like a detective and make sure to add actual examples. For example, what times in your life have you had evidence of not being good enough? Or on the flip side, what evidence do you have for times you were good enough, or even exceptional?

This exercise will help you to determine whether your thought is based in fact, or is just a story your mind made up.
